The Center’s goal is to provide training and continuing education in techniques, methods, philosophy and ethics of yoga and mindfulness to stimulate self-awareness and growth.  We provide workshops and classes led by teachers and professionals who are highly-trained in research and/or practices related to physical, psychological and spiritual health.  Principles of compassion and interdependence are fundamental to our teaching and research philosophy.

Our curriculum includes education and training in fundamental practices of yoga and mindfulness, such as yoga anatomy, meditation, mindfulness-based therapy, yoga philosophy, ethics and yoga teaching techniques.  We also develop and participate in innovative and service-oriented research projects to explore the benefits and application of yoga and mindfulness practices to a variety of community populations.  Collaborative partnerships with assisted living facilities, community and faith-based organizations, local schools and colleges ensure diverse and experiential training and educational offerings.

The Theory of Yoga

ACE's 200-hour teacher training program has a strong focus on scientific principles that underlie asanas, including skeletal function and the anatomy, physiology and neurobiology of movement. Our program integrates current scientific knowledge with traditional and complementary practices such as Ayurveda, yoga nidra and the chakra system. You'll learn how to safely and effectively teach asana through the application of basic anatomy, the methods and psychology of teaching and effective communication. You'll also learn yoga philosophy rooted in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita and you'll consider ways to apply the yamas and niyamas or ethical guidelines of yoga to your daily life. Fundamentals of meditation, beginning pranayama, Ayurveda, prenatal yoga and chanting will be introduced.

The Practice of Yoga

AEC's yoga teacher training program is designed to help you become a safe and effective teacher who can confidently offer yoga as a tool for lasting health and transformation. You will learn how to pay attention to the needs of individuals while encouraging dynamic, positive energy in your classes. As you study within a community of outstanding faculty and students who support and nurture your passion about yoga, you'll develop your own unique teaching style based on personal transformation and practical skills. Ultimately, you will learn that art of teaching lies not only in sharing your passion with others but also in empowering others toward their highest potential.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will:

  • Experience a deeper understanding of theories and practices of yoga
  • Know basic anatomical, physiological and neurobiological underpinnings of asanas
  • Gain confidence and skills to plan and teach yoga classes for diverse groups
